Addiction
Anything that alters mood can become addictive, food, social media, gambling, sex, and most notably substances. Substance use adds the dimensions of tolerance and dependence. Tolerance means that over time it takes more substance to get the same effect and dependence is both psychological and physical. Tolerance and dependence conspire to lead many to a possibly deadly progression over years, add to that the defense of denial that attempts to preserve our sense of control over what is happening and denial becomes a significant barrier to seeking help and recovery. Overcoming denial often requires a combination of self-awareness, support from loved ones, and professional intervention. Understanding and addressing denial is a critical step in the treatment of addiction and substance use disorders.
Addiction arises from a complex constellation of issues, feelings, and behavior. Many people become addicted and use substances to cope with strong emotions or underlying mental health issues. Many people have difficulty in relationships and there can be real benefits from working in support groups to gain insight into thoughts and behaviors that result in the use of substances like alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.
Identifying issues that underlie addiction and addressing them directly can result in breaking the cycle of addiction. I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Family Systems, and Contingency Management to address addictive behaviors.
I am dedicated to providing a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their mental health, relationships and break addictive behaviors. Together, we will work towards overcoming obstacles and fostering a more fulfilling and enriching addiction-free life.
